Utah License Plate Lookup /Inspection for Tags Renewal

Do I Need an Inspection To Renew My Tags in Utah?

Yes, but only in designated counties. Utah does not require safety inspections for most passenger vehicles. However, emissions testing is mandatory for vehicles registered in Cache, Davis, Salt Lake, Utah, and Weber counties before tags can be renewed. The five-county emissions inspection program was established to meet federal air quality standards in areas designated as non-attainment zones.

Utah uses a combined month-year registration decal system. As specified in Utah Code 41-1a-402, registration decals must be placed on the upper right corner of the rear license plate. The decal displays both the expiration month and year in a single sticker.

Exemptions and Special Circumstances

Several vehicle categories are exempt from emissions testing requirements under Utah law:

  • New vehicles with a Manufacturer's Statement of Origin
  • Vehicles with model year 1967 or older
  • Vintage vehicles with a model year of 1982 or older
  • Vintage vehicles with model years 1983 or newer that provide proof of collector vehicle insurance
  • Electric vehicles powered exclusively by electricity
  • Motorcycles and motor-driven cycles
  • Farm vehicles and implements of husbandry
  • Off-highway vehicles
  • Maintenance or construction vehicles not designed for highway operation
